Kavala
We had two beautiful days in the city of Kavala, located right by the coast out towards the Aegean Sea. We started off our morning with a walk around the enchanting Old Town, full of colourful old buildings and cobblestone streets. We climbed the hills up to the castle and acropolis, atop the city, where the views over the Aegean Sea were breathtaking. On our way down we stumbled upon MANTILITY, a really charming boutique and café that felt more like an art gallery. Definitely a recommendation to stop by.
As the sun set, we made our way to the restaurant of Egnatia City Hotel & Spa for dinner. The ambiance was serene, with a stunning open-air view of the city below. The dishes were an absolute delight, especially an appetizer with local influences, flatbread, halloumi cheese, honey-glazed fruit and pomegranate. Between the stunning view and the exquisite meal, it was the perfect way to end the day.
The next morning we went for a delightful morning dip at our hotel’s private beach, followed by a fantastic breakfast buffet. I highly recommend Lucy Hotel for your stay in Kavala.
Thassos
Our trip to Thassos started with a scenic ferry ride from Keramoti to the island's main port, Limenas. Arriving just in time to soak in midday sun, we checked into the cozy and welcoming Egeo Hotel. Organized by the kind team at Dynamic Travel Center & Hotels, our accommodation and meals were seamlessly planned, leaving us free to relax and enjoy every moment.
After settling in, we went out for lunch at La Scala – Seaside Experience, a short drive from the hotel, a gorgeous beachfront setting paired with beach food. The afternoon was spent basking in the sun and cooling off in the crystal-clear waters - pure bliss.
The next day, we dove into the island’s natural beauty. In the morning we headed out to Albatros Sea Sports & Water Games in Pefkari. Paddleboarding and kayaking on the turquoise waters was a refreshing way to experience Thassos’s stunning coastline. In the evening, we dined at the delightful Mesogeios Restaurant down by the city port. The Mediterranean-inspired dishes were delicious, and we followed dinner with a peaceful stroll around Limenas.
In the evening we ventured out to the south of the island to visit the Giola Lagoon. This was probably the nature highlight of our trip. A stunning natural seaside lagoon pool with perfectly still water with cliffs to dive from, looking out at the mountains in the horizon. We stayed here for sunset, it was absolutely breathtaking.
Our final day was a mountain safari with Thassos Off Road. Guided by the charming Mr. Ladis, we explored hidden waterfalls, climbed mountain peaks, and marveled at panoramic views of the island. It was a bumpy and dusty car ride up the mountain, but definitely worth it for the views and interesting historical anecdotes from Mr. Ladis describing the surrounding islands.
As we boarded the ferry back to Keramoti, we reflected on the diverse experiences Thassos offers—from serene beaches to rugged mountain landscapes. This island truly has something for everyone, and we can’t wait to return.
I can definitely recommend Kavala and Thassos to anyone considering a trip to Greece or Southern Europe. Especially if you are searching for warm sunny days in the late summer and fall. Thank you to Hertz Car Rental for arranging a car to explore in and to Aegean Airlines for flying us to Kavala for this project.
A huge thank you to Discover Greece for planning the trip.
